The Success Mechanism: Maltz's Goal-Seeking Model of the Mind
Maxwell Maltz called the brain and nervous system a goal-seeking machine. What the success mechanism is, how he said it works, and what research shows.
The success mechanism is Maxwell Maltz’s name for the goal-seeking machinery he believed the brain and nervous system provide. In his 1960 book Psycho-Cybernetics, he argued that this machinery works like a guided torpedo: you supply a target, and it steers toward it by making errors and correcting them. He also argued that the machinery has no opinion about the target. Feed it a picture of yourself succeeding and it becomes a success mechanism. Feed it a picture of yourself failing and the same equipment works just as hard in that direction.

What is the success mechanism?
Maltz took the word cybernetics from the Greek for steersman. Norbert Wiener had coined it in the 1940s for the study of control and feedback in machines and living things, and by the time Maltz wrote, engineers had built torpedoes and interceptor missiles that found their targets without a human hand on the rudder. Maltz called his application of those principles to human behaviour psycho-cybernetics, and he made one claim the whole system rests on: you are not a machine, you have one.
That distinction matters, and it is the part people skip. Maltz was not saying that people are machines. He was saying that a person operates equipment, and that most people work the controls without knowing the equipment is there. He also rejected the popular picture of a subconscious mind with its own agenda. There is no second self in his model. There is a mechanism and an operator.
The self-image is what makes the model bite. Maltz argued that the strongest goal-image you carry is the picture of the kind of person you are, and that every other target you set gets filtered through it. This is why he treated identity as the lever rather than willpower, and why the rest of the identity hub keeps returning to him.
Where did the idea come from?
Maltz was a plastic surgeon, not a psychologist. He built his theory on a pattern he saw in his own patients: some of them walked out of surgery transformed, while others carried the same shame across a face that no longer justified it. That observation is the origin of everything in Psycho-Cybernetics, and it is the subject of the maxwell-maltz page.
For the mechanism itself he borrowed from the science of his day. He cited Wiener on goal-seeking systems, John von Neumann on the brain as both analogue and digital computer, and Wilder Penfield’s cortical stimulation experiments as evidence that the brain records experience. He also leaned on animal behaviour. A bird navigates thousands of miles without instruction because its goals come preset, he argued, while a human being gets something better: imagination, and the freedom to choose a target that no instinct supplies.
How does the success mechanism work?
Maltz divided goal-seeking into two kinds, and the distinction is the most useful thing in the chapter.

Both types run on negative feedback. The torpedo does not fly a clean line. It goes forward, drifts off course, registers the error, corrects, overcorrects, and gropes its way to the target through a series of zigzags. Maltz said human learning has the same shape. A baby’s hand wanders as it reaches. A new driver saws the wheel back and forth. As learning proceeds, the corrections get finer, and the successful response gets kept while the failures fall away.
The second type interested him more, because it covers creative work. Searching for an idea, in his account, resembles searching for a forgotten name. You know something is there, or you would not be searching. Something in you scans, and when the answer appears you recognise it at once, often at an unguarded moment when you had turned your attention elsewhere.
Maltz went further than the evidence here. He speculated that the searching reaches into a universal mind, and he cited J. B. Rhine’s parapsychology experiments at Duke as proof that people can reach knowledge outside their own experience. Rhine’s work failed to replicate and has not been accepted. The idea that answers arrive after a break, though, turns out to be sound, and the research section below says why.
What did Maltz say the mechanism needs?
He closed the chapter with a set of operating principles. Stated in plain terms, his claims run like this.
The mechanism needs a target, and Maltz insisted the target be treated as already existing, in fact or in possibility. It works toward end results, so he told readers to hold the outcome and let the route appear rather than demanding the route in advance. Mistakes are the steering signal, not evidence against you. And the last one is the one people find hardest: he argued you have to let the mechanism work rather than make it work, because conscious straining jams the process, and because you get no guarantee in advance. Act as though the capacity is there, and it shows up as you act.
Two of those ideas recur across this site under different names. When Vadim Zeland writes about importance, he describes the same backfire from the other end: load an outcome with enough meaning and you get the opposite of what you wanted. Neville Goddard’s law of assumption shares the instruction to occupy the end and leave the means alone. Maltz reached it through servo engineering, which makes the convergence interesting rather than conclusive. Three men can be wrong in the same direction.
What is the difference between the success mechanism and the failure mechanism?
There is no difference in the equipment. Maltz was explicit that one mechanism serves both, and that the label depends on the goal-image it receives. He gave the negative version its own name and its own chapter, which the failure-mechanism page covers, and he listed the states he thought fed it: frustration, resentment, emptiness, and a picture of yourself as someone things go wrong for.
This is the cleanest idea in his system and the one with the sharpest edge. If the machinery is neutral, then a person with a poor self-image is not lazy or broken. They are running excellent equipment toward a picture they never chose, most of it assembled in childhood from false beliefs that nobody has audited since.

Maltz’s mechanism is a metaphor that happens to match how goal-directed behaviour is modelled, and a good one. Control theory in psychology reached similar structures without borrowing from him, and motor learning does run on feedback. What he added on top, the recording brain and the universal mind, came from sources that did not survive.
Where does this model mislead people?
Treating your mind as equipment can quiet self-blame, and that is most of its value. It can also do the opposite. Told that a neutral machine delivers whatever picture you hold, a person in the middle of illness, poverty or grief can conclude that they aimed the machine at their own suffering. Maltz did not draw that conclusion, and neither do we. Circumstances arrive uninvited, and no research supports the idea that a goal-image causes them.
The “let it work, do not make it work” instruction also needs a boundary. For a golfer over a putt, releasing conscious control is sound advice supported by the choking literature. For someone with an anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder or depression, “trust the mechanism and act as if” is not treatment, and the effort to stop straining can become another thing to strain at. Those conditions respond to therapies with evidence behind them, and a licensed professional is the right first call.
What did Maltz say changes the picture?
Maltz spent the rest of Psycho-Cybernetics on one question: how do you change the picture the mechanism is steering toward? His answers involved imagination rather than willpower, which is why his next chapter went straight to imagination and the nervous system, and why relaxation and effort matters as much in his system as ambition does.
Reading the theory changes very little on its own, as Maltz knew. The picture shifts through rehearsal and evidence, run with someone watching what you do rather than what you say you believe. That work happens in coaching.
